Mould can have a range of adverse effects on health, particularly when it is present in homes or other enclosed spaces. It can cause more serious problems for sensitive persons, such as children, the elderly or those with a weakened immune system. The following are some of the effects of mould on health:
1. Allergies and respiratory irritation
- Exposure to mould can cause allergic symptoms such as sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, irritated eyes and coughing.
- In persons with asthma or other respiratory conditions, the symptoms may worsen.
2. Respiratory infections
- Certain types of mould can cause infections of the respiratory tract, particularly in persons with a compromised immune system.
- Aspergillus mould can cause a serious infection known as aspergillosis, which may affect the lungs and other organs.
3. Skin problems
- Contact with mould can cause skin irritation, rashes or dermatitis, particularly in persons with sensitive skin.
4. Eye irritation
- Exposure to mould spores can irritate the eyes, causing redness, itching or a burning sensation.
5. Aggravation of asthma
- Persons with asthma are particularly sensitive to mould, which can trigger asthma attacks or aggravate existing symptoms.
6. Toxicity associated with black mould (Stachybotrys chartarum)
- Black mould can produce mycotoxins which, in high concentrations, can seriously affect health, causing severe respiratory problems, headaches, dizziness and even neurological conditions.
7. Long-term health problems
- Prolonged exposure to mould can lead to the development of chronic conditions, such as chronic bronchitis or systemic problems caused by mould toxicity.
It is important to identify and eliminate sources of moisture and mould in homes in order to prevent these health problems. Have you experienced mould-related problems in your space?
